Irrfan Khan Passes Away in Mumbai Hospital Due to Colon Infection
Indian actor Irrfan Khan, who was admitted to hospital after
his health deteriorated, died on Wednesday, Indian media reported. He was 53
years old.
Bollywood star Irrfan Khan, who brought modern flair to his
Bollywood films, died on Wednesday at the age of 53. The death, after a long
battle with cancer, was confirmed by a spokesperson who said that Khan was
surrounded by his family at the time.
The actor is survived by his wife Sutapa Sikdar and his two
sons Babil and Ayan.
Khan was among the first Indian actors to make a consistent mark
in Western cinema, after the first pioneers of crossover-like Saeed Jaffrey,
Roshan Seth and Om Puri.
He has also brought a modern sensibility to recent
blockbuster films and has appeared in several Hollywood films such as Life of
Pi and The Namesake.
Irrfan was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumor in 2018 and
was undergoing treatment in Great Britain.
He returned to India after recovering and finishing his film
Angrezi Medium.
Earlier this week, Saeeda Begum, the mother of Irrfan Khan,
died of a long-standing illness in Jaipur at the age of 95.
Saeeda Begum's funeral was held in Jaipur and due to the
coronavirus locking restrictions, only a few family members were allowed to
attend. Irrfan was unable to attend his mother's last rites.

An Incredible Talent
The tall, gangly actor won the National Prize for India for
his performance in Paan Singh Tomar. He also received Padma Shri, one of the
highest civilian honors in the country.
He has appeared in several award-winning international films
such as The Warrior, Slumdog Millionaire and Life of Pi. In Hollywood, he
worked in The Amazing Spider-Man, Inferno and Jurassic World.
Khan has consciously bypassed the traditional Bollywood tropes,
focusing on the intricacies of his art.
This allowed him to carve out an exceptional career in
Hollywood, where he collaborated with Oscar-winning directors such as Danny
Boyle and Ang Lee and appeared on the HBO program In Treatment.
The actor was last seen in the Bollywood comedy, Angrezi
Medium, which was released in March.
"An incredible talent," said Amitabh Bachchan in
one of the many tributes on Twitter.
"A kind colleague. A prolific contributor to the world
of cinema ... left us too soon to create a huge void," said the seasoned
actor.
Filmmaker Karan Johar said: "Thank you for raising the
bar as an artist ... Thank you for enriching our cinema ... We will miss you
terribly, Irrfan."
