Waterfalls in the World

Few geographic features illustrate the beauty and power of nature as dramatically as majestic waterfalls. The sight of tons of water spilling over the edge of a cliff or cascading over rocks never fails to impress. While the largest falls deserve pride of place on any bucket list, a waterfall doesn't have to be the tallest, widest, or largest to make it an attractive travel destination.

From mighty cataracts plunging over steep precipices to multi-step waterfalls that tumble gently into a series of pools, here are some of the most amazing waterfalls in the world.

Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls

If you thought Niagara Falls was big, well, Victoria Falls overshadowed it with its colossal curtain of water that stretches 1,708 meters, reaching 108 meters in height. It is these epic proportions that make Victoria Falls the largest waterfall in the world. Breathtaking, the endless stream of water tumbling down the cliff defies almost any belief.

Rightly so, the cacophonic roar which rises from the throat below and the fine spray which hovers in the air saw the falls called "The Smoke That Thunders" in the local language Lozi. Nestled on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls must really be seen to be believed.

Iguazu Falls

Iguazu Falls

Composed of some 275 different waterfalls, falls and drops, the Iguazu Falls on the Argentinian-Brazilian border are the largest waterfall system in the world. As such, it is the only waterfall that can rival or even surpass Victoria Falls. Over almost three kilometers in total, magnificent falls and waterfalls run through the Parana Plateau, the highest point being without doubt the Devil’s Throat Canyon.

This is best seen on the observation platform on the Brazilian side, where you are greeted with swarming sheets of water, a deafening roar and a fine spray. With a lush tropical forest surrounding it, the falls are a treat to visit. Visitors can take boat trips along the Iguazu River or explore the nearby trails and trails. Located in a magnificent setting like no other, the size, scale and spectacular landscapes of the Iguazu Falls certainly make it one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world.

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls

Located on the border between Canada and the United States, Niagara Falls is one of the most famous and recognizable waterfalls on the planet. Composed of American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Horseshoe Falls, its endless wall of gushing water stretches forever.

While the various observation decks around the falls offer fantastic views and vistas, you really need to take a boat ride below them to understand how big and powerful they are. Niagara Falls never fails to amaze, and every year millions of people come to see its astounding size and beauty.

Angel Falls

Angel Falls

The tallest waterfall in the world, Angel Falls in Venezuela certainly makes it one of the most spectacular sites imaginable. Pulling from the top of Auyan Tepui Mountain, the fall plunges 807 meters continuously into the jungle below, with much of the water turning into mist before reaching the ground.

Adding its other waterfalls and rapids and the total height of Angel Falls is a whopping 979 meters. Due to its remote location in Canaima National Park, Angel Falls is quite difficult to visit, although its beautiful surroundings and grandiose landscapes are certainly worth it.

Kaieteur Falls

Kaieteur Falls

Sneaking through the Amazon rainforest, the Potaro River flows through some of the most pristine and untouched nature on Earth until it suddenly reaches the Kaieteur Falls. Here, the water suddenly plunges 226 meters into the air to the pool below, covering the surrounding area with a fine spray.
Remarkably, the huge volume of water flowing in the fall every second makes it the largest single-drop waterfall in the world. Coming over four times higher than Niagara Falls, it's no wonder that Kaieteur Falls is one of Guyana's most popular tourist attractions.

Blue Nile Falls

Blue Nile Falls

Known as Tis Issat (“steaming water”) in Amharic, the Blue Nile Falls are located on the Blue Nile River in northern Ethiopia. Although much of the water is now diverted to a hydroelectric dam, it is still a beautiful sight and one of the best-known tourist attractions in Ethiopia.

Detian Falls

Detian Falls

Straddling the border between China and Vietnam, Detian Falls is the name given to two sets of magnificent waterfalls that lie along the Quay Son River. While the multiple layers and drops of the falls are absolutely breathtaking, the perfect scene is complemented by the lush vegetation, the majestic mountains and the karst formations that surround them.

Long closed to the world due to various border disputes, Detian Falls is now an increasingly popular tourist destination; hordes of visitors take boat trips under the waterfalls, covered in a fine mist of spray.

Gullfoss

Gullfoss

As it hides in a colossal crevasse that crosses the otherwise barren Icelandic landscape, the size and scale of Gullfoss only become apparent the closer you get. Once you reach the edge of the cliff, however, you will find that the ongoing waterfalls and huge falls actually have the highest volume in all of Europe.

Lying almost perpendicular to each other, its two series of falls make it an epic spectacle, and its gushing roar provides the perfect soundtrack to the dramatic landscape presented. Meaning "Golden Falls", Gullfoss is so named because of the color of its waters which sparkle in an attractive way in the sun.

Huangguoshu

Huangguoshu

Measuring 77.8 meters (255 feet) high and 101 meters (330 feet) wide, Huangguoshu is one of the largest waterfalls in Asia and is part of a group of 18 waterfalls in around. A 134-meter (440-foot) long cave formed naturally at the back of Huangguoshu allows visitors to see the waterfall from up close and you can even touch the water.

Jog Falls

Jog Falls

Jog Falls, created by the Sharavathi River, falling from a height of 253 meters (829 feet), is the tallest waterfall in India. Before the rainy season, Jog Falls is almost unrecognizable with only a pair of thin streams of water running down the cliff. But during the monsoon, the waterfall comes to life and even exceeds the Kaieteur falls in Guyana in terms of height and volume.

Plitvice Waterfalls

Plitvice Waterfalls

The series of waterfalls that connect the 16 lakes of Plitvice Lakes National Park make this picturesque landscape the most popular natural attraction in Croatia. Located in the middle of wooded hills near the Bosnian border, small streams, lakes and waterfalls form an attractive water garden that invites exploration. A series of boardwalks, bridges and platforms make it easy to walk around the park. Free boat rides take passengers from the top to the bottom of the lakes where visitors can see Veliki Slap, the highest waterfall in the country.

Yosemite Falls

Yosemite Falls

The tallest waterfall in the United States, Yosemite Falls spills over a cliff into three cascades and offers picturesque views from several locations in Yosemite National Park in California. A tough all-day hike takes visitors to the top for panoramic views of the majestic park and the towering Sierra Mountains beyond. However, the falls vary in the water flow and sometimes disappear completely in the event of drought. The best time to enjoy the splash of water and the thunderous roar of the falls is in the spring after the winter thaw.

Dettifoss

Dettifoss

Classified as the most powerful waterfall in Europe, Dettifoss is best known for the volume of water that gushes on its edge each season. Located in Vatnajökull National Park in the northeast of Iceland, Dettifoss can be seen on either side of the Jökulsá river in Fjöllum which feeds the falls and plunges into the canyon below. The east bank of the river offers the best views and is equipped with facilities, including parking, but the slippery trails can be crowded during the tourist season.

Nohkalikai Falls

Nohkalikai Falls

Located near the town of Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places on the planet, Nohkalikai Falls is classified as a waterfall, which means that water loses contact with a rock when it pours onto a cliff at the edge of the Himalayas. The tallest of its kind in India, Nohkalikai is fed by rainwater collected in the wooded plateau above, so its volume changes considerably depending on the time of year. During the dry season, the water pours quietly into a turquoise green pool. During the monsoon, the water crashes in a tumult of white spray.

Tugela Falls

Tugela Falls

The Drakensberg Mountains in Royal Natal National Park in South Africa are home to a series of five connected falls that collectively constitute Tugela Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in the world. The water descends by jumping over the magnificent amphitheater, an imposing rock wall which is a popular tourist attraction in its own right. A six-hour hike in the Tugela Gorge crosses the river back and forth, leading hikers to the top. A less difficult path takes visitors to the foot of Tugela Falls for a full view of the five-level waterfall.
